College Counseling

More choices and less stress ...

Our goals are to be sure that all our students have choices of colleges to attend and to lessen the stress that is associated with college admissions. We guide and support students and families through the college search and application process with a comprehensive, four-year program that includes the following:

Educational Programs

Our goals for these events are to educate families about the current college admission landscape, provide insights into the process, and keep families informed about where their children should be in the overall process. We offer:

  • College Night for Seniors
  • Financial Aid and Scholarship Presentation
  • College Night for Juniors
  • Second College Night for Juniors
  • College Program for Sophomores
  • Case Study Night

Individual Appointments

Starting the spring of a student's junior year, we begin meeting individually with students and parents.

In family meetings, we discuss students' academic records, interests, and goals. When meeting individually with students, we talk about their personal and academic interests, possible college choices, and expectations.

Senior year, we meet with students and parents regularly to guide them through the college application process, provide feedback, offer advice on students’ application essays, and help students with their final college decisions.

Relationships with Colleges

We bring over 140 college admission representatives to the school each year to meet with our students.

We personally participate in college admissions conferences, professional organizations, and college visits to maintain strong relationships with colleges and universities and stay abreast of what's happening in the field.

List Balancing and Strategy

We help students to be both ambitious and realistic when it comes to their college applications. Taking into account each student's academic, testing, and extracurricular background, we educate students and their families about how to create balanced lists. We then review those lists with students twice during the senior year.

Optional Opportunities

College Counseling Bus Trip

Sophomores and juniors can take advantage of a robust touring program that our office sponsors during Spring Break. Typically, students will have the chance to see over 10 different institutions in five days and to share impressions and notes with one another in the process. There is a cost for this trip.

Summer Essay Writing Workshop

The summer before senior year, the college counseling staff teach three optional, weeklong essay writing workshops to help students get a head start on completing the essay portions of their applications. There is a fee for these classes.
