Branson's annual Beloved Community event for students, faculty, and staff on Thursday, January 16, 2025 featured guest speaker Dr. Melba Pattillo Beals, one of the "Little Rock Nine" African American students who desegregated Central High School in 1957.
Dr. Beals spoke to students about her experiences growing up in Little Rock. She painted a vivid picture of what she survived – "I was seeking equality: I wanted voice, choice, and freedom" – while facing extreme hatred and violence from many around her. Her family values gave her strength and purpose and taught her to "lead with love" throughout her life. She also shared more carefree memories of going to high school in Santa Rosa, and her life well lived in the Bay Area since then.
In addition to the keynote, Junior Fellowship winners from the Class of 2025 presented their work in smaller workshops, and the day ended with wrap-up sessions in Advisory. Many thanks to all of our event organizers and presenters!
