Lady Bulls Compete in Cardinal Newman Classic
Kelley Myerberg

The Varsity Girls Basketball team participated in their first tournament of the season, the Cardinal Newman Classic.

On Thursday night, the Bulls came out with a strong defensive effort against Encinal recording 13 steals in the first quarter on the way to a 30-2 lead. And they never looked back, finishing with a 66-27 victory over the Jets. Junior Hannah Golan led all scorers with 19 points including four 3’s, though 9 different players recorded points in an all around team effort.

In game 2 of the tournament, Branson took on #2 ranked Archbishop Mitty. Once again, the Bulls led with their defense, holding the potent Monarchs offense to only 7 points in the first quarter. Senior Jaliyah Wiggins artfully dissected Mitty’s vaunted press throughout the evening to keep the game close.

But early foul trouble left Hannah Golan on the bench during a 25-2 second quarter. The Bulls closed the gap in the 3rd but went on to lose 68-33. In addition to contributions by Golan (7 points) and Wiggins (6), freshmen Rosie Slayen (11) and Avery Myerberg (5) accounted for nearly half of the Bulls scoring.
