Nestled between the entrance to the academic quadrangle and the brook,
the Writing Center offers students a comfortable and peaceful place to
write. Here, students can use one of the fourteen networked computers to compose, edit and improve their drafts—or
they can take the old fashioned approach and sit at a table, scratching
down thoughts with a pen.
More formal instruction in the Writing Center takes the form of
Composing Process classes, scheduled writing classes for courses
outside the English department, and guest writers who speak about
writing and lead workshops. Overall, the goal of the Writing Center is
that at least as much emphasis be placed on the process of writing,
even the enjoyment of writing, as on the final document itself.
Students work independently, collaboratively with other
students or teachers, and collectively with their classes. Students
practice and play with their writing—with their grammar, sentence
structure, theses, topic sentences, spelling, revisions, diction,
transitions, arguments, conclusions—before they hand in a paper. They
talk; they write; they rewrite.
The Writing Center is also home to Forum, Branson's fiction, poetry, and fine arts magazine. Student editors and layout designers meet on a regular basis and work with several faculty members during the year. Released annually during FAB, Forum boasts creative and diverse works submitted by students and faculty. |
